It is equipped with four 16-bit base address registers, each extended by four zero bits. According to what is accessed, be it program code, data or stack data, one of the four base registers is automatically chosen. 4 Instruction Formats and Addressing Modes In the simplified microprocessor structure presented in Chapter 1, the memory address of an operand was indicated directly in the instruction word. Actual microprocessors can rely on different possibilities for address modification. The address of a memory cell (effective address) is computed only during the execution of the instruction (dynamic address computation).

Zilog Z8001 also works with an extended address representation; its address bus is designed for 23-bit byte addresses. The address computation begins with the starting address given in the ORO definition and is carried out by a so-called virtual program counter in the assembler. The virtual program counter is started with the beginning address and, after the processing of each program line, is incremented by as many memory words as are used by this statement in the machine code. A symbol in the label field of the program line is entered in the symbol table with the temporary value of a virtual program counter and is indicated as "defined".
