2. A variety of clay tools is nice to have, but it’s fine to start with a single pin tool, which can score, draw, make holes, and do most everything to clay that your finger cannot. As you’ll see in the clay section, we make a scoring tool, which is a great addition and cheap to make. It is simply a paint stirrer cut in half with eight straight pins epoxyed to one end. This tool was created by Megan Bogonovich and has helped all my students make good connections with their clay (see image). For making slabs, you need a wooden rolling pin and set of slats for making even slabs.

Setting up for Working with Other Sculpture Materials When making relief sculptures from joint compound, it is good to lay newspaper under your work to protect the table. A putty knife or painting knife is the tool that should touch the compound and the work—not your hands. That said, having a large, wet sponge nearby to wipe off inquisitive fingers is advised. Colored joint compounds are recommended for use with kids because their color fades as they dry, indicating that the “creating time” is nearing an end.
