18 Two-Phase Flows The most common group of multiphase flows is two-phase flow. In twophase flow, the fluid has two parts which are not chemically or physically Chapter Summary (usually) related and each phase has its own flow properties. The common examples for two-phase flows are aerosols, suspensions, and, for a biofluid example, blood. Blood is one of the most common two-phase (or multiphase) fluids. The first phase is the plasma (it contains water, proteins and electrolytes) and the second phase is created by the blood cells.

Regarding the fourth order of tube radius in the denominator of the Poiseuille equation (see Eq. 50)), by decreasing diameter (converging shape) the pressure drop will increase significantly. But the pressure drop for a regular tube is linear even when changing the length due to its order in the numerator of Eq. 50). 16 Pulsatile Flow in Rigid and Elastic Tubes Understanding the physics of pulsatile (oscillating) flow is of primary interest for many medical and industrial applications. As it was explained before, when the flow properties are a function of time, pressure drop within the tube becomes a function of time too (unsteady flow).
