As peasants had little money, they almost always had to pay in seeds, harvested grain, animals etc. The stories are told in language that is simple, direct, and eloquent. Among contemporaries who composed secular songs in what was then a transitional style, Loyset Compère (c.1445-1518) & Alexander Agricola (1446-1506) were prominent. The romances, fabliaux, chansons de geste, and ballads of southern and central France were recited and sung in England. Lombardo's Inferno is so knowledgeable of the translation tradition (which it uses to marvelous effect), so poetically well-crafted, so compelling to read, so well-documented without overwhelming the reader, that I simply did not want to put it down. Floridi (2002) explores the textual transmission of Sextus's works; he notes that there are only seven known Latin manuscripts from the period.
